Drawing Us In: Queer Compassion & Community
Join co-editors and researchers Dr. Phillip Joy (Applied Human Nutrition, Mount Saint Vincent University) and Dr. Megan Aston (School of Nursing, Dalhousie University) for an engaging, heartfelt evening exploring Queer Compassion in 15 Comics — a new illustrated book that brings together queer stories of compassion. Part book launch, part community gathering, this event invites you into a vibrant conversation about what queer compassion looks like in everyday life. Through fifteen comic vignettes created by 2SLGBTQ+ artists and storytellers, the book explores the small acts of kindness, quiet moments of resistance, and deep connections that help us thrive. Come meet the editors, view selected comic panels, and take part in a conversation about queer health, healing, and hope. Whether you're into graphic storytelling, social justice, or just want to feel inspired — this event welcomes all. Free • All Ages • Dry Event (those under the influence will NOT be permitted to attend) • Light Snacks Provided Let’s gather in community to celebrate queer creativity and the radical power of compassion.

OPEN BOOK: A 2SLGBTQIA+ Human Library
Wednesday July 23, 2025 6:00pm - 8:00pm ADT
OPEN BOOK: A 2SLGBTQIA+ Human Library is a powerful storytelling event that brings together 2SLGBTQIA+ newcomer and refugee community members from around the world to share their lived experiences in a safe, affirming, and inclusive environment. Hosted by the Rainbow Refugee Association of Nova Scotia (RRANS) in partnership with Queer Arabs Halifax, the YMCA Centre for Immigrant Programs, and Halifax Public Libraries, the event transforms people into “human books” who engage in one-on-one or small group conversations with attendees. These “books” include refugees, newcomers, and long-time residents, each offering personal narratives that explore themes of identity, migration, resilience, and belonging. Held annually for the last couple of years at the Halifax Central Library, OPEN BOOK creates opportunities for empathy, connection, and learning between participants and the broader public. The event challenges stigma and stereotypes while fostering meaningful dialogue and community understanding. The Human Library continues to be an accessible, impactful, and community-driven initiative that uplifts the voices of 2SLGBTQIA+ newcomers and refugees and builds bridges across cultures and lived experiences.

So Fetch! Dog Walk
Saturday July 26, 2025 11:00am - 12:00pm ADT
Calling all puppers and hoomans! Let's go for a dog walk around Shubie Park. We’ll meet on the grassy area next to the parking lot at the end of Locks Road. Pooches and hoomans are encouraged to wear plenty of rainbow attire so look for the rainbows when you arrive. We’ll begin the walk shortly after 11:00 am, doing a loop around the park that sticks mostly to off-leash areas, with a quick midpoint break at Sunrise Beach for a group photo. Following the walk, stick around for ice cream sandwiches, freezies, and treats for all.

But wait! There’s more! After our walk, any pups who want to be included in the Best Dressed contest (voting will happen online) will need their portraits taken! The cost for a portrait is just $35, with 100% being donated to the SPCA. You'll receive a digital copy of your portrait and be entered in the contest for a chance to win your own mini photo session with Wet Nose Images!
