Drawing Us In: Queer Compassion & Community
Join co-editors and researchers Dr. Phillip Joy (Applied Human Nutrition, Mount Saint Vincent University) and Dr. Megan Aston (School of Nursing, Dalhousie University) for an engaging, heartfelt evening exploring Queer Compassion in 15 Comics — a new illustrated book that brings together queer stories of compassion. Part book launch, part community gathering, this event invites you into a vibrant conversation about what queer compassion looks like in everyday life. Through fifteen comic vignettes created by 2SLGBTQ+ artists and storytellers, the book explores the small acts of kindness, quiet moments of resistance, and deep connections that help us thrive. Come meet the editors, view selected comic panels, and take part in a conversation about queer health, healing, and hope. Whether you're into graphic storytelling, social justice, or just want to feel inspired — this event welcomes all. Free • All Ages • Dry Event (those under the influence will NOT be permitted to attend) • Light Snacks Provided Let’s gather in community to celebrate queer creativity and the radical power of compassion.

Kinky Colours 12 - An Adult Themed Black Light Party
Saturday July 19, 2025 9:00pm - Sunday July 20, 2025 1:00am ADT
We'll be taking over a ballroom on the 3rd floor of the Chocolate Lake Hotel Halifax for our 129th event to date! Grab your friends and come join us as we'll be having our 12th annual Kinky Colours event. This party will be a part of the 2025 Halifax Pride Festival and it is always one of the BIGGEST and CRAZIEST Nightshade events and this year it will be happening the same day as the Pride Parade so you're not going to want to miss this! So be sure to wear sexy neons or whites to react to the ultra violet lights! We've got waaay too many black lights and plan to flood every inch of the ballroom at the Chocolate Lake Hotel with glowing fun! When you're digging through the closet or out shopping for that perfect outfit but you're not sure what will glow and what won't, there are free Ultra Violet apps you can download for your mobile device! Now although there is no dress code, it is strongly suggested that you dress in theme or some type of alternative wear is suggested. If you don't know what to wear then black clothing is strongly suggested but again try to dress in something you would consider sexy and edgy. Dress sexy and cool, cause it does get hot and sweaty in there. Due to the nature of the venue, public decency rules do apply. Drink pricing for the bar is as follows: Domestic Beer, Well Shots $7.00 Premium Liquor. & Liqueurs $8.00 Imported Beers, Coolers $8.00 House Wine $8.00 Soft Drinks $4.00 Cash only bar. The hotel has an ATM in the lobby but we have emptied it at every Nightshade event so come prepared! Please drink responsibly. Each year our Pride parties have Sold Out weeks before each event so buy early or risk missing out! Tickets are available for only $25+tax and purchases can be made online through our website. Coat check service will be $3 for the night which includes in and out privileges for one hanger of clothes and/or one bag. There will be a self-coat check area but this will be not be monitored and is at use at your own risk. We will be adhering to all government regulations at our Nightshade events. In addition extra cleaning procedures will be put into place for both the venue and for our own equipment. Hand sanitizer stations will be readily available as well of course there is plenty soap and water in the washrooms. Valid government identification (19+) is required to gain entry. If you are sick please stay home! We have done away with our regular 'no refunds' policy and replaced it with a full credit of your ticket price. If you inform us that you will not be in attendance prior to us opening the doors at 9pm than we will issue you a full credit for one of our future events. Please check with the hotel for their cancellation policies. If for any reason we are forced to reduce capacity or cancel this event, causing you to not be able to attend then you will be issued a full credit of your ticket price for one of our future events. You may also purchase optional Cancellation Insurance for $1 per ticket which would see the full price of your ticket ($25 ticket or $28 ticket price w/coatcheck) refunded to you if you can not attend the event for any reason, so long as you contact us about the cancellation prior to the start of the event. The Nightshade dance floor will be a flood of bodies as our new DJ, Gyrrrl on Decks, is stepping up and taking over the Nightshade sound system! “In the beginning, at the end of nowhere in the South-West corner of NS, about 24 years ago, Gyrrrl on Decks fell in love with curating music and making the dance floor vibe. When the night shines like day, and the wide starry eyed come out from under the darkness and into the light to play, this multi-genre hot mess spins your requests to impress all the while feeling so #blessed." Nightshade will be actively on the search for local DJ talent to perform at our events. So please reach out with suggestions of amazing Halifax DJs you would love to see on stage at our kinky costume parties! We will have a body painting station setup where guests can paint each other or make use of our talented body paint artist Kai, who will be available to pain you for a negotiated donation. There will be some hardcore equipment brought in for those who know how to use it. For everyone's safety it will be well lit and monitored throughout the night by our DMs. This is a no camera event with the exception of event photographers, please message to apply to shoot for the event. Hotel rooms for the Nightshade Kinky Colours, event are at a special rate of $229 but only until the cut of date Thursday June 19th, 2025. To reserve a room in our block you must call and say you are with the group rate Pride. There is a chance to still book in our block after this date as well so make the call and see if they can squeeze your late ass into our group of rooms! Booking with our Block is ideal as your room will be surround by other people attending the party. It will thus be easier to connect with others and you will receive fewer noise complaints than if you were to book a room elsewhere in the hotel. Nightshade does not profit from room rental, so if you can find a better deal do what is best for you. Note that complaints against you, noise or otherwise, may lead to you being banned from future events as Nightshade wants to keep in good standing with the hotel. Hotel reservations can be made by calling central reservations (800) 528-1234 or the hotel directly (902) 477-5611 ext For more details about booking hotel rooms for this event visit this link: https://nightshadehalifax.com/HotelRoomRentals.html Nightshade makes no commissions and profits in no way from room rentals. Be sure to stop and say hello that night to myself (Chris Awesome), our staff, performers, photographers & volunteers. Halifax Naked Peace Protest Ride & March
Sunday July 20, 2025 12:00pm - 2:00pm ADT
A fun free-spirited tradition that has been held locally for over a decade (and globally for even longer!), where attendees are welcome to strip down and shed their shame as they take to the city streets in celebration of our natural world and the beauty of all bodies! You can Ride or March, whether with your bike, wheelchair, scooter, or your own two feet; whatever gets your body moving! Come join in or show your support by cheering us on! In a time when so many bodies are policed or made the subject of political rhetoric and autonomy taken away, one of the many positive messages we want to promote is that nudity should not be viewed as inherently sexual, but rather should be accepted as a beautiful part of life and a symbol of freedom.

Wednesday July 23, 2025 6:00pm - 8:00pm ADT
OPEN BOOK: A 2SLGBTQIA+ Human Library is a powerful storytelling event that brings together 2SLGBTQIA+ newcomer and refugee community members from around the world to share their lived experiences in a safe, affirming, and inclusive environment. Hosted by the Rainbow Refugee Association of Nova Scotia (RRANS) in partnership with Queer Arabs Halifax, the YMCA Centre for Immigrant Programs, and Halifax Public Libraries, the event transforms people into “human books” who engage in one-on-one or small group conversations with attendees. These “books” include refugees, newcomers, and long-time residents, each offering personal narratives that explore themes of identity, migration, resilience, and belonging. Held annually for the last couple of years at the Halifax Central Library, OPEN BOOK creates opportunities for empathy, connection, and learning between participants and the broader public. The event challenges stigma and stereotypes while fostering meaningful dialogue and community understanding. The Human Library continues to be an accessible, impactful, and community-driven initiative that uplifts the voices of 2SLGBTQIA+ newcomers and refugees and builds bridges across cultures and lived experiences.

Back by popular demand, this show aims to challenge the assumption that trans bodies are solely a source of trauma, that all trans bodies are "wrong" or "bad". Performers play with the theme of the body to explore their own experiences. Bodyworks is educational, campy, and a space for queer and trans joy.
